AGM 2011

The 2011 AGM was held on 7th and 8th May at the beautiful Winterbourne House and Gardens to the west of Birmingham. It was reported that an increase in membership and funds in the bank means the BWA is flourishing.

What was requested was members ideas of how the money that is superfluous to requirements should be spent. Four editions of the Gazette are to be reinstated, and some ideas were put forward regarding promotions, which are being looked into, but if you are a member and have a suggestion, please let someone on the National Council (details of whom are at the bottom of the Regional Information page) know.

West Midlands did a fine job and put in a lot of work to organise and run the AGM, and our grateful thanks go to all concerned.

NATIONAL MEMORIAL ARBORETUM A group of carvers from Essex Region have been carving memorials for the NMA over the years and they have recently added another carving to the list. They were asked by the Womens Royal Naval Service Association if they would create a memorial in remembrance of twenty one WRNS and a Naval Nursing Sister who were killed on 19th. August 1941 when the merchant ship SS Aguila, on which they were travelling to Gibraltar, was torpedoed. They were the first naval girls to lose their lives in WW 2. Ted Jeffrey reports: The WRNS logo is, appropriately, a Wren (feathered variety) and we copied a little silver statuette that was presented to HRH Princess Anne when she became Commandant of the WRNS. Our version was somewhat enlarged and we set about carving this bird last year. There are just five of us in our team now and we still give our time every Wednesday to the NMA and have been doing so for the last thirteen years, when we first created the Polar Bear. The carving was finished at the beginning of May and we trundled up to the NMA to mount it on its plinth in the WRNS garden on Friday May 14th.

More great news!  We have another new Region in Kent, which gives us 3 in that county.  Hamlet Wood Carvers are based south of Maidstone - details are on the Regional Information page

Great News!! We have a new Region in North Derby! The Leader is John Richards, Dennis Fry is Secretary and Sam Giblett is Treasurer. Details are on the Regional Information page. I know you will all join me in a huge "WELCOME".

Sad News: Bedworth and Nuneaton Region is no longer viable as it has insufficient members, and has therefore closed.

North Wales and Borders branch at Chirk Castle This year we lucky folk of the North Wales and Borders branch will be moving our summer residence to Chirk Castle, Wrexham. It is a National Trust property set in the beautiful countryside around the Welsh/English borders. We will be there from April the 28th until May the 23rd. Our home will be a marquee, so wheelchair access should not be a problem. In addition to a display of the clubs work, we will be well represented on each of the open days by several club members all willing and eager to discuss their work, or just talk about woodcarving. Ours is never a static display, we will all be busy beavering away with some current project, but please, dont let that put you off asking any questions, we are only too happy to see you there. If you have any queries, please phone me Ron Cannell, 01745 825041, or Eileen Walker, 01352 770706.

The Ox & Bucks Woodcarvers held their first major Woodcarving Exhibition at The Gallery, Oxford Town Hall, in March, and what an exhibition it was! On show were the major Community Projects that they have completed, including the 3 Oxfordshire Panels depicting 15 major historic events that told place during the 1,000 years of Oxfordshire, plus The Abingdon Panel that commemorated 450 years of the granting of the Town Charter and shown to Princess Ann when she visited the Town. In addition there were over 6O other carvings from their 11 lady members and 16 gentlemen members.
